​Depression kan betragtes som en af de mest almindelige psykologiske tilstande, men det er desværre også en tilstand, der kan have en alvorlig indvirkning på ens liv, hvis den ikke håndteres. 

Det er normalt, at mennesker med depression har en tendens til at holde deres problemer for sig selv, hvilket gør det svært at finde ud af, hvem der har brug for hjælp. Inden du går ud for at søge hjælp til dig selv eller til en af dine kære, som du tror har en depression, kan det måske være gavnligt at forstå, hvad depression er, og hvordan den kan påvirke dig.

Hvad er depression, og hvordan kan den påvirke dig?

Depression er en alvorlig psykisk lidelse, der ikke kun påvirker ikke kun hvordan du føler, men også hvordan du handler og tænker på ekstremt negative måder. Den kan forårsage en enorm følelse af langvarig tristhed, dårligt humør, manglende motivation og manglende interesse for aktiviteter, som man engang nød. På grund af de følelser og den adfærd, der opstår, og de følelsesmæssige og fysiske problemer, der opstår, kan det mindske din evne til at fungere i hjemmet, på arbejdet og i skolen.

Hvad er årsagen til depression?

Symptomerne på depression kan være forskellige fra person til person, hvordan du oplever følelser af tristhed og graden af styrke. På baggrund af dette kan symptomerne variere fra lette til alvorlige, disse kan omfatte:

  • Lavt og deprimeret humør, følelser af værdiløshed, skyldfølelse, håbløshed og tristhed.

  • Undgår at tale om følelser med andre.

  • Udbrændt, intet tilbage at give, umotiveret til at gå på arbejde og i skole.

  • Tab af energi og øget træthed.

  • Ændring i søvn- og appetitmønstre, overdreven eller mindre spisning eller søvn.

  • Tab af interesse for aktiviteter, som man engang nød

Bare fordi depression er en alvorlig tilstand, betyder det ikke, at den er umulig at behandle. Heldigvis kan depression behandles, det kræver bare engagement, tålmodighed og tid.​

Depression, hvad er risikofaktorerne?

Ligesom andre psykiske lidelser har depression sin egen type risikofaktorer. Disse kan øge risikoen for at udvikle depression, og det afhænger af din kontekst og situation.

Disse kan omfatte.

  • Personlighed: Personer med lavt selvværd, som er overvældet af stress eller er pessimistiske, synes at være mere tilbøjelige til at opleve depression.

  • Miljømæssige faktorer: Udsættelse over tid for vold, misbrug, omsorgssvigt eller fattigdom kan bidrage til at gøre nogle mennesker mere sårbare over for depression.

  • Genetik: når depression kan være familiært betinget. Et eksempel er, at når en enægget tvilling får en depression, har den anden en 70 % chance for at få det på et tidspunkt i sit liv.

  • Biokemi: Forskellen i specifikke kemikalier i hjernen kan bidrage til symptomer på depression.

Hjælper dig med depression

Selv om depression er en almindelig psykologisk tilstand, er det noget, der skal tages alvorligt. Depression kan til tider være normalt håndterbar, der er andre gange, hvor den ikke kan det, og depressionen rammer, og man kan føle sig overvældet af livets bekymringer. 

Desværre oplever mange mennesker depression og den følelsesmæssige, fysiske og mentale tyngde, som den medfører.
